This catch is from yesterdays charter out of Naha. There are two typhoons on the horizon, but that did not stop this group of anlgers. They landed lots of Mahi Mahi, small tuna's, 5kg rainbow runners and so on.... i would say the mahi were the most plentiful.

Dark pompfret caught while giant squid fishing

Caught at 400meters below the surface; this pompfret was particularly enjoyable prepared as a sashimi dish and miso soup. There was no fishy smell or oily meat.

Aug 9th Deep Sea Fishing Okinawa

It was a long day this past weekend. The pickin's were slim but this team of anglers waded through the thick of it and landed some small mahi mahi's, tuna, katsuo and a wahoo.

Yesterday trip out of Naha port on Yoshimaru netted approx. 25 mahi mahi's, 30 or tuna's, 3 skipjacks and 2 rainbow runners. Large groups can ride and fish in comfort because Yoshimaru has a large cabin which is capable of sleeping up to 8 anglers.

Now, ... how does that look for a sashimi dish? This tai was used for the "year of rat" party during a celebration at a friends house. This type of Tai can only be caught via deep drop fishing on Okinawa. They typically live in waters around 240~350 meters deep.

Ahhhhh! What a beautiful site. Tai and royalty in Japan have a long history as you can find links back to the "Heian period" (794~1185) were it was served as food for the emperor and used in recorded rituals for blessings to the gods.

Deep Drop Fishing for Red Snapper on Okinawa

Single angler 1/2 day charter fishing for Tai. Depth 280 meters, Electric Power reel. As you can see he netted 22 kidai(tai), 1 Muru Aji, 1 Kochi, and 2 banjos banjos or chousenbakama as the japanese call it, (チョウセンバカマ).Not bad for 3 hrs of fun fishing. You can experience Deep Drop Fishing on Okinawa too!
FYI: Kidai can also be called: Yellowback sea bream or red snapper.

Fish Okinawa - Mahi Mahi in Onna Village

Mahi Mahi are running thick in Onna village! Proud angler holds up his catch after arriving back from his charter in Onna port at Manza beach. This angler was persistent in his tactics and used a casting rod with a variety of jigging lures to land him his cooler box full of fish. Changing the "pinks" for the "blues" and vis versa... then onto "poppers;" while finding what the fish were biting for that day. Good catch! Way to represent the young fishermen out there on Okinawa.

Saltwater Fishing for Akajin or "Red Grouper" on Okinawa

Capt Chris is holding up an Akajin from a fishing charter that went out this past Sat. Dec 1st. The red grouper was a little over 1kg. Weather within the Awase area was perfect. This trip netted bittaro, mibai, akajin, juuma, buri, and akana.

Payao and Inshore Fishing - combination charter

Today's 1/2 day charter was a combination of local payao fishing and inshore "sabiki" fishing. We netted a few katuso, hireika, katakashi, mibai, kusuku, suzumedai, gurukun, and a few other varieties. After the trip we cut largest katsuo and made sashimi right at the port. It was great!@

Inshore Fishing on the Pacific Ocean - Awase, Okinawa

This angler caught an "aagai" as the Okinawan's call it in "Hogen" (Okinawan Dialect). In English it is known as a parrot fish and is a good sashimi fish. Good catch!

Pics from this past week: I love the swells that form behind the boat. You can not tell from the picture, but the waves were 3 meter high outside the center buoy therefore we stayed inside the bay this whole trip.
